Pretend it is a Friday night, and after a long stressful week- you are ready to let your hair down and get the weekend started. You have a mental image of how your night is going to be: you are going to look hot, walk into the bar(s) with your head held high, and at the end of the night there is a Little Caesars' pizza with your name written all over it.
But plot twist, somewhere along the night your mascara starts running because you were drunk crying, your phone is dead, and you are just one LemonDrop shot away from throwing up that Little Caesars' pizza that once seemed so delicious. You are drunk, you are emotionally drained, and you are tired. We have all been there.
I have witness and seen these train wrecks. And from personal experience, I try to avoid them at all cost.
DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE: Write it down; reread the underline/bold/italic words a million times; say it out loud. Do whatever you have to do to remember this one. DO. NOT. FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST. DRINK. AND DRIVE. I have a zero-tolerance for drinking and driving, and so should you. Coordinate a designated driver, have a taxi ready, have a reliable person who you can call if things don't go as plan. If you think you are invincible to get behind the wheel while intoxicated and that nothing can stop you; then stop for your parents, your friends, and your love ones. Because a situation like so is completely unacceptable when it was something that could have been 100% prevented.
Memorize a number: Typically by the end of the night, my phone battery is drain to the very last percentage or completely dead and lifeless. In my wallet, I have a little folded up index card that has my roommates' numbers on it. So when all else fails, I have numbers ready to call if I get separated and my phone is dead.
Earlier this semester, my beautiful roommate Caroline was stuck out in Snook, TX after Chilifest. Her phone was dead. And if you have ever walked around a field at 1:30am in Snook, TX- that is one thing. When you are trying to find your friend out in a field at 1:30am in Snook, TX- who's phone is dead, then that is another story. Fortunately, Caroline knew her boyfriend's number and she was able to find someone who let her borrow their phone. Caroline was able to call her boyfriend back in College Station, who called me, through constant communication- and after an hour and a half of looking for each other, Caroline and I were able to find one another. If Caroline had not memorize her boyfriend's number, an hour and a half could have turned into a whole night.
The buddy system: My roommates and I have nailed this one down. I am truly grateful to be able to call my roommates my best friends. We typically have a good size group/meet up with people when we go out, but no matter how big or how small our group of friends is for the night- us four always make sure to look out for each other. Whether it is from creepy guys or from anything that could go wrong, they constantly have my back- and for that, I am forever thankful. You should have at least one person who you feel comfortable enough to rely on.
If the makeup is running, it is time to stop: My heart goes out to every girl who has gone through this one. I sympathize with you. Typically, what I tell myself is: "If the tears are flowing, it is time for bed". ** This rule also applies to throwing up...**
Comfort is key: I am absolutely horrible at this one. Absolutely awful. You are looking at a girl who climbed a fire escape in a dress with 5 inch heels on. No worries- I did it with grace, however, my feet were not very forgiving the next day. For the past two years, I have celebrated Mardi Gras in Saint Louis and it is a tradition that I plan on continuing. This year, my friends and I all made sure to dress for warmth rather than cuteness. And that made a whole world of a difference. We weren't freezing our butts off and miserably cold like we were our first year, we actually kept warm and enjoyed ourselves. Girls, I promise you that substituting those cute-yet-so-uncomfortable heels for a pair of wedges will go a long way.
Have fun: Last but absolutely not least, HAVE FUN. Maybe you and your friends aren't at the place that you wanted to go, but that shouldn't stop you from having fun. Make the most out of your night! Smile, have fun, and don't sweat the small stuff. Don't be the person who kills the mood. Life is short, life is fun, enjoy your night!
Have a safe and fun upcoming weekend,
